2014 COLUMBIA VALLEY SANGIOVESE

2014 COLUMBIA VALLEY SANGIOVESE
2014 COLUMBIA VALLEY SANGIOVESE

The 2014 vintage features strawberry, cherry and pomegranate aromas with hints of tea leaves and anise.  It opens to flavors of tart cherry and red currant, deftly balanced with racy acidity and fine-grained tannins.

Tasting Notes:

We have been crafting award winning Sangiovese since 1999.  We are confident the 2014 edition will also have a medal around its neck after it is scored. It is a delightful combination of 85% Sangiovese, 7% Malbec and 8% Syrah from hand- selected vineyards:  Dwelley, Sagemoor, Seven Hills, Kiona and our Estate Vineyard.

It is a perfectly balanced Sangio with backbone and lovely fruit. It has an appealing dark red color and an inviting nose of leather saddle and roasted chestnuts. The mid-palate of dried black olives introduces a ratatouille ending that does not stop giving.

Winemaker's Notes:

Debuting in 1999, Sangiovese was a tip of the cap to Gordy’s Italian heritage.  It quickly became one of our most requested varietals.  Now, despite being over 10% of our total annual production, we still have trouble keeping on our shelves.  The 2014 vintage features strawberry, cherry and pomegranate aromas with hints of tea leaves and anise.  It opens to flavors of tart cherry and red currant, deftly balanced with racy acidity and fine-grained tannins.

Vintage Notes:

At the time this was the hottest vintage on record, with Growing Degree Days at 25% above average.  It stayed hot and dry well into the fall, creating a compacted harvest that began ten days ahead of schedule and finish two weeks early.  Hot summer days reduced berry size and lead to wines with intense flavor and depth. This is a year for big, powerhouse wines. Enjoy!
